What went wrong with SpaceX rocket? Here’s how engineers turned detectives

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket that lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Sunday was supposed to deliver 4,000 pounds of supplies and payload to the worldwide Space Station.

Just a little more than 2 minutes into flight, there was a major failure with the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft.

SpaceX’s Falcon rocket is supposed to be different because it wants to reuse the expensive booster by landing it precisely onto a barge in the Atlantic ocean. He says it was not clear how the disaster occurred.

The exploded rocket marks the third of Space X resupply mission effort to fail completely.

Competitor Orbital Sciences lost its Antares rocket and Cygnus cargo carrier in an explosion in October, and a Russian Progress supply ship was lost after liftoff in April. And last October, Orbital Sciences Corp.’s supply ship was destroyed in a launch accident.

SpaceX says the initial part of the liftoff went well, until the vehicle went supersonic.

As this Sunday’s launch has shown, a standard rocket launch is hard enough without adding in the complexity of reusability.

At the same time, Gold acknowledged that the Falcon 9’s first complete failure could hardly have come at a worse time. The company is famous for building small satellites for beaming the internet from the space. The technology was going to be used to provide instruction to astronauts as they performed various tasks on ISS.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER – Are we nearing a cliff where the safety of astronauts aboard the global Space Station could be jeopardized by a lack of supplies?

How badly do you feel this failed flight could affect SpaceX.

NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration confirmed that the mishap will have an impact on the launch schedule for the Jason-3 satellite, which is created to measure global sea surface height.

“SpaceX will now have to work on their technical problems and political problems simultaneously”, said Greg Autry, an assistant professor at USC who follows the space industry.

SpaceX has orders for nearly 50 upcoming launches – work valued at $7 billion – from a growing list of government and corporate customers.

“The launch failure by itself is not much of an issue,” said Bill Ostrove, analyst at Forecast global Aerospace, in a statement to Forbes.

“SpaceX has demonstrated extraordinary capabilities in its first six cargo resupply missions to the station, and we know they can replicate that success”.

“We’re good from a food and water standpoint”, NASA’s top spaceflight official, William Gerstenmair said at a press conference. Congress has directed the USA Air Force to stop using the Russian-built RD-180, that powers the main stage of the Atlas 5. While this failure was certainly a setback for NASA and SpaceX, both parties have expressed determination in finding the route cause and returning back to flight as quickly as possible.
