Orbital’s Antares rocket is being refurbished with new engines and expected to return to flight next year.
“We are disappointed in the loss of the latest SpaceX cargo resupply mission to the worldwide Space Station”.
“It isn’t critical that they make the exact dates – there is some flexibility in our overall launch plans”, added Iridium spokeswoman Diane Hockenberry. We must find this cause of failure. They’re hard at work trying to figure out what went wrong after Falcon 9 exploded two minutes after takeoff. The cargo craft had no astronauts on board and no one was hurt by the explosion. I doubt it was us who jinxed it, but the Falcon 9, the SpaceX rocket that was going to carry HoloLens to the ISS along with other supplies, never made it out of the atmosphere. The rocket was carrying food, research equipment and science projects, including those from students at San Jose’s Valley Christian. He says they have delivered substantial cargo to the ISS in the past.
The video below is from SpaceX’s live feed of the launch.
The spacecraft entered into an uncontrolled spin shortly after launch and days later burned up when it re-entered Earth’s atmosphere. And last October, another company’s supply ship was destroyed in a launch accident. The team wanted to explore the effects of artificial shark skin on bacteria growth in microgravity at the global Space Station.
“The escape system slated for the second version of Dragon would have – should certainly have taken the astronauts to a safe place after an anomaly like this”, said SpaceX president and chief operating officer Gwynne Shotwell. “Space is hard”.
As we reported Sunday, the Falcon 9 exploded a few minutes after liftoff from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
Russian Federation expects to take another crack at launching supplies on Friday from Kazakhstan. The other contender is Boeing.
SpaceX has arranged a platform in the Atlantic Ocean to serve as a landing pad, as part of its tests to recover Falcon 9’s first stage. It was a severe blow to NASA, still reeling from previous failed shipments. “Everyone was cheering and clapping”.
But officials at Space Florida, a quasi-government agency created to expand the state’s space industry, called the disaster a “mishap” that will be quickly solved by Space Exploration Technologies Corp., the California-based company founded by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk.
